Our story

A public meeting was convened by Gundagai Chamber of Commerce in 1963 to discuss the formation of the Gundagai District Historical Society. Representatives from the Shire Council, local businesses, community organisations and the interested townsfolk agreed to the establishment of the Society. The main aim of the Society was to collect and preserve for future generations artefacts that represent the history of the Gundagai district.

In 1964 the Shire Council purchased a block of land with a small shed for the Society to establish the Museum. With the assistance of several community organisations, the Museum was ready to be officially opened to the public on 10th December 1965.

With the Museum collection continuing to expand over the years. The Society became registered as a charity in 1979 to undertake extensive fundraising to construct a new Museum building. With the assistance of a small grant to finish the build, the new Museum opened in 1981. Over the years since, several sheds were established to house the large and varied collection.

Gundagai Historical Museum Incorporated was registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission in 1996. It has remained a volunteer run museum and is open to the public six days a week.
